ARMONK, N.Y. - You might not think a fifth grader could be an advanced artist, but five students at that grade level are taking the Advanced Art class at the Hergenhan Recreation Center
"They're very skilled for their age," said Luis F. Perez, the illustrator and former Polo Ralph Lauren art director from Armonk who teaches the class.
The class covers basic drawing in charcoal, graphite and color with pastels.
"The goal is to learn how to see and simplifying things," Perez said of teaching drawing to young students. "Instead of asking them to draw a vase, we might focus on individual shapes and break things down to the most simple form and build from there."
The students have created a series of drawings, including Escher-like impossible images and self-portraits.
The eight week class, which is held Wednesday afternoons, is in its fifth week.
